An openbite can result from a previous or current habit such as thumbsucking, from a hyperdivergent growth pattern and/or from some other dental or skeletal abnormality.
Due to the created opebite, and the lack of contact between the upper and lower teeth, tongue thrusting often occurs exacerbating the already openbite and flaring the front teeth forward.
Openbites due to habit are often treated with a habit appliance such as a tongue crib, along with braces.
